Rottweiler OFA and JLPP Testing: What Buyers Should Verify

Learn what OFA records and JLPP DNA results can show, how to verify the dog and result, and which questions to ask a Rottweiler breeder.

Start with a record for the individual dog

“Health tested” is not a complete result. Ask which dog was tested, which evaluation or DNA test was performed, when it was completed, who issued the result, and where the record can be checked. A parent's record applies to that parent; it is not a blanket guarantee for every puppy.

The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) maintains searchable records for certain tests and conditions. The organization notes that public availability can depend on the result and owner authorization. If you cannot find a record, ask the breeder for the official report and an explanation rather than filling in the missing information yourself.

What JLPP results mean

Juvenile laryngeal paralysis and polyneuropathy (JLPP) is an inherited condition that affects Rottweilers and Black Russian Terriers. OFA describes the associated test as a DNA test for the mutation known to cause JLPP.

OFA's result categories are specific: “Normal” or “clear” means the dog tested normal for the mutation; “Carrier” means the dog carries one copy and may pass it on; “Affected/At-Risk” means the dog tested as affected for the mutation and may be at risk of clinical signs. Ask to see the actual report and confirm the dog's identity and the laboratory or registry source. Do not treat “clear” as a general statement about every health condition.

For breeding decisions, the meaning of a result depends on the mating and inheritance of the condition. Buyers should ask the breeder to explain the pair's results and consult the issuing organization or a veterinarian for medical questions.

What OFA and orthopedic records can tell you

OFA records can include evaluations for orthopedic conditions and other screening information. The appropriate screenings depend on the breed and the individual dog. Ask which tests the breeder considers relevant, what the result means, and whether the dog was old enough for the evaluation shown.

A document may use shorthand or registry codes. Ask for the full record if a term is unclear. Verify that the registered name or other identifier matches the dog profile, and compare the date and result with the issuing organization's database or report.

Questions to ask a breeder

  • Which health tests or evaluations were completed for each parent?
  • Can I see the report or a verifiable registry record for each result?
  • What does each result mean, and what does it not tell me?
  • Is the test a DNA result, a physical evaluation, or another kind of screening?
  • How do the two parents' results fit together for this particular litter?
  • What veterinary records and follow-up information will accompany the puppy?

Good health documentation is specific and dog-by-dog. It supports an informed conversation; it does not guarantee a puppy will never become ill. For the records Snubnose publishes, start with the Health Testing page and the relevant male Rottweiler profiles and female Rottweiler profiles. Ask your veterinarian about the care of an individual dog.
